2017 Top 100 Prospects – Winter Update 1-5

Below is my list of the Top 100 Prospects in SSG Baseball. This list will cover the Top 5 prospects.  If you are not familiar with the concept of Future Value, this excellent article over at Fangraphs will help you.

Player Name Team Position Age FV
  Israel Ávila NYY 3B 21 60

#5 Israel Ávila, 3B, NYY – The #1 pick from the 2017 draft class, Ávila burst onto the scene, college diploma in hand from Washington State, and started hammering baseballs at Charleston – .313/.409/.547 which earned him an immediate promotion to AA Trenton. He didn’t fair so well at Trenton, but the skills and tools are there. He reminds scouts of a young Miguel Cabrera.  75 hit tool, 70 power and the 55 Eye and 60 Avoid Ks to go with all that. Avila can’t run – he’s a plodder on the basepaths, and he’s not much of a fielder, but damn can he hit. If he eventually has to move off 3B he could likely take on 1B duties or in the worst case scenario he’ll be able to DH for New  York. Likely ETA is 2019.

Player Name Team Position Age FV
Juan Encarnación TB CF 22 65

#4 Juan Encarnación, CF, TB – Going, going . . . JUAN! Juan is going to hit, run, throw, field, serve concessions, mentor young kids, cure cancer – ok maybe not everything on the list, but most of that is in play for Encarnación in the near future. After being rushed through AA Montgomery to AAA Durham and all the way to Tampa-St. Pete in September, Rays fans pumped the breaks a little bit on their future star centerfielder. Though they also rejoiced in the juicy line he put up during his cup of coffee last year. He triple-slashed .300/.364/.500 in his first 50 Major League at-bats which should be a sign of what’s to come from this young man. It’s hard to imagine that just a couple years ago he was back in Moorehead, MN shoveling snow off the baseball fields in April so he could take swings. Juan has across the board talent, plus talent everywhere except for working the count (Eye 45), but that’s only because he loves to hit the ball so much. The only question mark this lefty has on his profile is if he can hit lefties.

Player Name Team Position Age FV
Leo Marrero PHI CF 23 65

#3 Leo Marrero, CF, PHI – Scouts love Marrero though his talent hasn’t fully translated quite yet. Already a superb defensive outfielder, Marrero has turn his eye toward fulfilling the lofty hitting promise he has. 60 Contact, 60 Power, 60 Eye, 55 Avoid Ks. He’s going to get on-base, he’s going to hit, and he’s going to hit for Power. The Phillies will give him every opportunity to hone his craft and break out in AAA Lehigh Valley this season, but you shouldn’t be surprised to see him shuttling back and forth to Philadelphia when the Phillies need someone in the outfield for extended periods of time. Don’t sleep on all his run saving abilities on defense!

Player Name Team Position Age FV
Julio Urias LAD P 21 65

#2 Julio Urias, LHP, LAD – Urias has a plus-plus 100mph fastball (75/75) and he uses it relentlessly. He has masterful control (65/65), even at age 21, and can still tap into some untapped potential Stuff (60/80). Some scouts dock points for his stature – he’ 5’10, in heels – or his ridiculous goggles, but hitters are afraid to face him and that’s all you really need to know. He threw a combined 85+ innings in the minor leagues last year and had a ~1.10 WHIP and a sub 2.75 FIP. He’s first trial with the big club didn’t go well (5.06 FIP, 5.83 ERA) but don’t worry, Urias will be tearing up major league lineups in the very near future.

Player Name Team Position Age FV
Franly Mallen COL SS 20 70

#1 Franly Mallen, SS, COL – Franly. That’s the name of the #1 prospect in all of SSG Baseball – Franly. Can we agree on a nickname here?  Fran-Maul? Gosh, I don’t know, hey Phil, please go find this kid a nickname. He can’t be walking around with his crazy 70 grade Contact and 80 grade power and have people asking “Man, is Franly for real?” Fran. Am I over-reacting? Is this so similar to Hanley that I should just get over it? I can’t. We can’t have a once in a generation talent smacking baseballs out of Coors Field at a pace that will eventually make Troy Tulowitzki blush and call him Franly. Watch this kids rapid ascent through the Rockies system this year, he’s going to turn heads.
