2017 Week One – Rookie of the Week.

The first week of the SSG Football Season got underway yesterday and there were some Rookie’s that made some noise in their debuts. None more impressive than the SSG overall Player of the Week.

WLB Kyle Thomason (Miami Dolphins) – Round 1 – Pick 13

Thomason was impressive in his SSG debut in a tough loss to Division Rival the New York Jets. In what ended up being a tight Defensive affair, it was a shame that Thomason’s performance was not in a winning effort. It only took his second professional play to make an impact as the Jets QB Petty on their second play of the game faked the run and dropped back to pass, but there was no faking the Rookie Linebacker as he dropped Petty to the ground for a sack and a 7-yard loss. With the Jets leading 3-0 they would get the ball back late in the 1st Quarter, they would not be able to do much with the ball, they would test the rookie who was covering Wide Receiver Scott on a pass down the middle that Thomason would pick off and give the Dolphins the ball back. The Dolphins would not be able to capitalize on the turnover however and would see the Jet’s moving the ball on offense again, they would be faced with a tough 3rd down and 15 yards to go from their own 48-yard line, Thomason would overpower the RT Bell to sack Petty for a second time for another 7-yard loss.

It was play’s like this that kept the Dolphins in the game against the Jets but would eventually go on to lose 13-7. Thomason would manage 10 total tackles, 2 sacks, 1 pass defended and 1 interception on what would be a memorable first game for the rookie.

SLB Austin Russell (St Louis Rams) – Round 1 – Pick 2

The second overall pick in the draft had a very nice day in a victory over the Seattle Seahawks. He would pressure the QB 2 times and have 11 total tackles in the 27-21 win.

RB Roger Brennan (Kansas City Chiefs) – Round 1 – Pick 10

Many of the 1st round running backs had tough days however, Brennan would impress with 86 yards on 11 carries in a loss to San Diego.

NT Geoff Steinhorst (San Diego Chargers) – Round 2 – Pick 4

Two rookies with nice debuts in the Chiefs/Chargers matchup. Steinhorst would end up on the winning side with 6 total tackles, 1/2 sack, 1 blocked pass and 1 QB hurry.

FL Kaleb Mueller (Atlanta Falcons) – Round 2 – Pick 5

Mueller would score touchdowns on back to back possessions for the Falcon’s with TD catches of 20 and 15 yards from Matt Ryan. He would catch 7 passes for 65 yards and the 2 touchdowns in an impressive 37-13 win against the Saints.

RB Amos Doleman (Carolina Panthers) – Round 2 – Pick 31

This late 2nd round pick would rush for 45 yards on 11 carries and grab 16 yards receiving from 2 catches for a total of 61 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground in a 29-13 win over Tampa Bay.

RB Logan Bills (New Orleans Saints) – Round 4 – Pick 17

What a steal this could looks to be in the middle of the 4th round. Touched the ball a total of 20 times in the game for 139 total yards. 62 of those yards were rushing on 14 touches, 56 yards from 4 catches and 2 crucial 3rd down completions and also 21 yards on 2 punt returns in a busy day for the rookie.

RB Conner Danner (Houston Texans) – Round 5 – Pick 22

The nice performances from Running Backs taken late in the draft would continue with 58 yards on 10 carries and 1 touchdown in the 41-22 win against Jacksonville.

RB Jameson Schultz (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Round 6 – Pick 6

In the same game, back Schultz would be just as impressive. He would score 2 touchdowns against Houston and rush for 51 yards on 10 carries.

All in all it was an impressive day for the Draft Class of 2017. There were many more that I could mention but tried to pick out the best. I can’t wait to see how these guys can follow up their week 1 performances in Week 2.
