Angels to Pujols: ‘We’re Considering our Options’

With a 4.4 WAR in 2016 and a 2.5 WAR in 2015, Albert Pujols still has some gas left in the tank. As the Angels continue to sputter in 2017, the team has apparently told Pujols that he is being shopped around to a team looking to add an impact bat at either 1B or DH. Pujols has always been a strong defender having posted a defensive efficiency rating of 1.043 in 2016 and 1.053 currently in the 2017 season, both of those numbers higher than his career 1.029 EFF at 1B.

Angels Director of Scouting Scott Luhnow said of Pujols, “He has ability still, and he’s a natural leader with an incredibly high work ethic, and he is a very intelligent player as well.”

All of these characteristics bode well for a potential playoff team looking to add a bat which could be a surprise. With the Angels currently chasing a wildcard birth, it seems the time may be coming for the team and Pujols to part ways.

With the trade deadline less than 60 days away, the Angels have reportedly been telling teams that they are willing to pick up a substantial portion of Pujols’ remaining 2017 contract.
