Babcock Faces High Expectations from Leafs

Mike Babcock never missed the playoffs during a successful decade as coach of the Detroit Red Wings. He signed an six-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs that made him the highest-paid coach in NHL history, but getting a rebuilding team to the postseason right away may be more of a challenge than even he can overcome.

Babcock enters camp having to deal with the usual “getting to know you” problems faced by any new coach as well as the pressure to succeed in Toronto; the Maple Leafs have made the playoffs once since 2004.

I think it was wise for the Red Wings to let Babcock walk. This team needed a fresh face, and Mike was great. As a Red Wings fan, we wish him the best, but I’m glad we got a draft pick for him and a fresh start.
