In a move that shocked the SSG sports community, Jeff Copeland was last night awarded the prestigious Hackitt award for sports journalism at the annual Hackitt Banquet. Copeland was the top of an illustrious shortlist of sports hacks who attended the gala event at the Hilton in Bignote, OR.
Copeland had been an industrious contributor to the coverage of SSG sports through the summer months, with the highlight of his work being his upbeat analysis of the Chicago White Sox prospects for the 2016 season. As it turned out, Jeff’s preseason article was about the best thing that could be said about the White Sox this year.
In a move that surprised many, Copeland got the award ahead of SSG sports editor-in-chief Mike Lowe. Lowe had pushed an innovation agenda this season, with his “Sim Sports Vocal” series of podcasts delighting younger fans but clearly failing to win over the older generation, which still liked to lick the newsprint ink from their fingers after rummaging through the boxscores the day after a game.
