What happened yesterday……
Toronto and Texas won their respective opening games of the divisional series. The Blue Jays squeaked past the Orioles 4-2 behind a strong outing from Chris Sale striking out ten in eight innings, losing pitcher Lance Lynn pitched all eight innings for Baltimore and was unlucky to lose. Reddick, Pompey and Peterson all banged out two hits off Lynn and Longoria drove in two of the Blue Jays four runs. Wade Davis got the save but did give up an earned run in the ninth, 48970 cramped into Rogers Center.
In Minnesota it didn’t go well for the home nine. The game started wildly with each side scoring three runs as Darvish and Arrieta struggled to gain command of the game. Arrieta didn’t last longer than the 4th innings before been pulled allowing 7 runs as the Rangers blasted four runs including a three-run homer from Profar. Darvish made it to the sixth allowing three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out seven. The Rangers extended their lead to 10-3 before Martin Perez gave the Twins some hope allowing three runs in the 8th, 39,452 in attendance.
Games on tap today……
We see the start of the NL divisional series’ and what a pair of pitching matchups we have. The Dodgers and Nationals re-new their playoff rivalry with Kershaw and Scherzer face off, pitching have 29 wins between them. Will the Nationals miss Bryce Harper?
The reigning champions Colorado host the Cubs with Peralta facing Lester, again two pitchers with 29 wins between them. Pitchers will their work cut out in this series with the likes of Corey Dickinson (NL batting champion – .324 average), Nolan Arenado (38 HR, 108 RBI) and Kyle Schwarber (35 HR) ready to punish any mistakes.
In the AL we see game 2 of the series, important for Baltimore and Minnesota to try and get a win back before the travel day Sunday. If they lose both go into game 3 looking down the barrel of elimination from the playoffs. The Orioles face the only 20 game winner of the 2017 season in Marcus Stroman, after an injury hit 2016 Stroman has been superb, Matt Latos is on the mound for the Orioles.
In Minnesota the Twins’ hopes rest with Cingrani an off-season trade from the Reds, he has struck out over 200 this season. Tolleson became a permanent starter this season and flourished leading the AL in K/9 (9.7). Stat of the day, Rangers 23-26 against LHP this season.
