SSG Baseball Draft review – just how did the top picks fare?

Pick 1

San Francisco Giants select 3B Kevin Wilson (Born: San Diego, CA)

­Previously undrafted in 2015 Wilson returned to school, the Giants saw their chance and made him the number one pick of the 2016 draft signing a bonus for $3,500,000. Wilson saw action at both A levels in the Giants org in Augusta and San Jose combining for a slash line of .396/.423/.729 before seeing action in AA Richmond and in 61 games hit .268/.320/.411 with 5 HR’s and 35 RBI. Slated to start the 2016 north of San Francisco in Sacramento at AAA level.

Pick 2

Houston Astros select SS Mike Wise (Born: Chicago IL)

Native from Chicago, Wise stayed in Chicago for his college experience. Houston selected him with their second pick overall but was unable to come to agreement with Wise. Wise hit 19 HR’s in 57 games in college with a gaudy slash line of .391/.456/.676, it looks likely he will return to the draft in 2017.

Texas Rangers select P Robby Alaniz (Born: Fairmont, WV)

Signed for just $140,000, a bargain for the Rangers, Alaniz went 1-4 for Texas (AZL) with a 2.41 ERA, 1.23 WHIP striking out marginally more then he walked (26/22). Aged nineteen unclear if the Rangers have seen enough of Alaniz to promote him.

Miami Marlins select P Pat England (Born: Great Falls, MT)

Went a 2-4, 4.13 ERA and 1.21 WHIP combined in the A Levels with Greensboro and Jupiter striking out 49 in 49 innings in 9 starts. Signed for $1,600,000 England has been promoted to AA level Jacksonville Suns for the 2017 season.

Pittsburgh Pirates select 1B Clarence Bates (Born: Sunnyvale, CA)

Signed for a sizeable fee ($7,500,000), hit .337/.414/.500 in Single A but struggled on promotion to West Virginia (A) hitting .219/.278/.393 but showed increased power with 5 HR in 44 games.

New York Mets select P Accuncao Marceiro (Born: Cumana, SUC)

Venezuelan national who the Mets failed to sign with the signing deadline and will return to the draft in 2017.

Pick 7

Philadelphia Phillies select P Jorge Arroyo (Born: Caguas, HUM)

Signed for $5,500,000 the Puerto Rican national pitched in Clearwater (A) for the season, and was largely disappointing going 3-8 with a 5.27 ERA and 1.56 WHIP issuing 34 walks in his 16 starts while striking out 67. Despite the stats Philadelphia have promoted to AA Reading for the 2017 season.

Minnesota Twins select P Cliff Miller (Born: Auburn, CA)

19 year old Miller was drafted and signed for $4,600,000 and spent the entire season at the R level in the Gulf Coast League. Found the transition hard, after starting 12 games in college walking 15 and striking out 163 his walks doubled and K’s fell dramatically (49). Went 1-8 with a 6.35 ERA not surprise/ngly in 13 starts, projected to start the season in the GCL once again.

Pick 9

Cincinnati Reds select CF Tomas Martinez (Born: Santo Domingo, DIS)

Martinez was a travelling man in the Reds org. Starting in Rookie level and hitting well, a short stay in Daytona (A), then onto Pensacola again hitting well before making it to Louisville (AAA) for a brief stay. Combined for a slash line of .303/.374/.654 with 15 HR, signed for $1,300,000 and projected to start the season in the International League with Louisville.

Pick 10

Chicago White Sox select P Mike Kelly (Born: Redondo Beach, CA)

Signed for $2,200,000, pitched in the Rookie League for Great Falls going 5-5 in 17 starts with a 5.51 ERA, he made the playoffs in two starts posted a 7.56 ERA in 8.1 innings.

Pick 11

Chicago Cubs select P Pat Gawley (Born: Rapid Valley, SD)

Signed for $7,500,000, pitched at Single A Eugene for the season going 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Voted the NWL Outstanding Pitcher and finished third in the NWL MVP award.

Pick 12

Arizona Diamondbacks select C Art Sherrod (Born: Los Angeles, CA)

Cheap signing bonus of half a million dollars, Sherrod featured in one game at Single A Hillsboro and the rest of the season was a A level with Kane County. Played and caught in 66 games batting a slash line of .269/.348/.433

Pick 13

Colorado Rockies select RF Jeff Miller (Born: Cedar Rapids, IA)

Signed for $4,000,000 by the 2016 World Champions and feature at Single A Boise hitting .240/.292//427 in 28 games after missing 6 weeks of the season with back spasms. Involved the Boise Hawks NWL playoff series where he hit .333/.429/.667

Pick 14

Los Angeles Angels select P Joel Castle (Born: Union, NJ)

Originally selected by the Angels in round 28 of the 2015 draft where he was unsigned the Angels made Castle their round one pick of the draft with a signing bonus of $240,000. Split a 6-2 record between Burlington and Inland Empire (A levels) along with 21 saves and a gaudy 1.83 ERA. Allowed just 33 hits in 44 innings pitched and struck out 52.

Pick 15

Tampa Bay Rays select CF Juan Encarnacion (Born: Moorhead, MN)

Despite missing 8 weeks with a fractured wrist Encarnacion hit .298/.394/.512 at Single A Hudson Valley in 22 games, signed for $2,000,000.

Pick 16

Detroit Tigers select P Ron Forrest (Born: Shawnee, OK)

Signed for a $4,200,000 bonus, the Tigers parked Forrest in Florida for the season where in the GCL he went 2-3 with a 3.93 ERA in 11 starts. Struck out 50 and walked 15 in 55 innings.

Pick 17

Kansas City Royals select P Esteban De La Cruz (Petoskey, MI)

Lefty signed for $2,200,000 and was dispatched to Lexington where he struggled in his 15 starts going 3-6 with a 5.50 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. Allowed 8 HR in his 15 starts and 89 hits in 73.2 innings pitched.

Pick 18

Cleveland Spiders select P Ken Walker (Born: Akron, OH)

Walker, born and schooled, then signed for a team in Ohio for a SB of $1,900,000. Found the Arizona league too easy, struggled to adapt to A level ball with a 5.43 ERA and really struggled at AA level in Akron, had a tendency to give up the long ball but finished the season on a high as part of the Lynchburg team that made the Carolina League play-offs where he pitched 14.2 innings.

Seattle Mariners select P Lucio Rivera (Born: San Jose, SAN)

6’2 righty had a promising start to the 2016 season pitching in the AZL, striking out 35 in 28.1 innings before been shut down for the season and missing 7 months with shoulder inflammation. Signed for a bonus of $1,975,000.

Pick 20

Toronto Blue Jays select P Jose Amaya (Born: Guaynabo, BAY)

Potentially graded with one of the best changeups, Amaya signed for $4,800,000 and pitched well at two levels in 2016. At Bluefield (R) he went 2-1 in 4 starts with a 1.88 ERA, then moving up to Vancouver (Single A) where in 9 games he went 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA.

Boston Red Sox select P Donnie Reid (Born: Richmond Heights, MO)

Signed for $3,750,000 and helped the Lowell Spinners to the playoffs with a 4-1 record, a 3.67 ERA striking out 59 in 54 innings. Went 1-0 in the playoffs with a 3.38 ERA, also pitched a level higher in Greenville with a 4.62 ERA and a 0-1 record.

Pick 22

Detroit Tigers select P Jonathon Carroll (Born: Detroit, MI)

Detroit native pitched well for Connecticut (Single A) and Lakeland (A) with an 8-0 record combined striking out 77 in 68.2 innings. Finished third in the NYP MVP voting, signed for $2,500,000.

Pick 23

Atlanta Braves select OF Don Jones (Born: Camp Pendleton North, CA)

Signed for $5,000,000, showed power in the GCL with 11 home runs in 57 games and speed stealing 10 bases. Moved to GM Jadofsky’s old stomping ground in Rome where he hit .292/.370/.375 in seven games stealing a further base. Projected to start the season in Rome.

Pick 24

San Diego Padres select OF Juan Garcia (Born: Highland, CA)

Cheap signing bonus of $340,000, played in the DSL and AZL hitting .200 and .345 respectively combining for 5 home runs and 33 RBI’s. Looks like starting the 2017 season in the AZL for this nineteen-year-old.

Pick 25

St Louis Cardinals select P Jim Rose (Born: Kansas City, KS)

Signed out of high school for $750,000, pitched in the Cardinals’ Rookie League teams in 2016, went 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA in the GCL, then started on game in Johnson City.

Pick 26

Washington Nationals select P Curt Mitchell (Born: Blytheville, AR)

Another high school signing, costing the Nationals $2,200,000. Was placed in Single A with the Auburn minor league team, in 5 starts went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA before going down to a season ending injury, and an injury which will not see him pitch again until at last July (torn rotator cuff).

Pick 27

Oakland Athletics select C Robby Henderson (Born: Altadena, CA)

Signed out of Georgia Tech for $230,000, bringing comparisons of Jason Varitek. Hit in Stockton all season with a slash line of .291/.335/.401 in 60 games, whilst committing just 2 errors.

Pick 28

Colorado Rockies select P Len Mathews (Born: Richmond, VA)

Lefty signed for $2,400,000 and spent most of the season at Single A with Boise going 5-2 with a 4.23 ERA but also moved up a level to Modesto where he was 0-3, but a 2.70 ERA. Pitched in the Northwest playoffs with Boise and pitched for a 1.59 ERA.

Pick 29

Los Angeles Dodgers select Antonio Gallardo (Born: Denver, CO)

Signed for $2,000,000 and is ranked 4th in the Dodgers farm system (2nd batter) spent the season in A level with Great Lakes (.261/.311/.467) and Rancho Cucamonga (.262/.357/.459) with 10 home runs and 36 driven in.

Pick 30

Milwaukee Brewers select P Chris Bryant (Born: Middletown, OH)

Signed for $1,500,000 and played in Brevard County all season going 7-4 in 13 starts with a 3.86 ERA, striking out 81 in 72.1 innings pitched, walking just 15. Top ranked pitching spec in the Brewers’ org and ranked 29th in SSG Baseball’s top 100 prospects.


Mr Irrelevant 2016

Selected in the 40th round, the last pick of the 2016 draft the Dodgers selected P Joe Reynolds, a Georgia native but at high school in Napa Napa, CA. He pitched 4 games in the AZL but also at Oklahoma (AAA) where he struggled with an 18.69 ERA, in the AZL he went 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA. Currently slated to start the season the Ogden Raptors roster in the Pioneer League.
