SSG Baseball Game of the Week
Minnesota Twins v Detroit Tigers
Probable Starters – Phil Hughes 11-9, 3.73 ERA v Trevor Cahill 2-0, 2.55 ERA
With the Orioles facing the lowly Rays in a weekend series the Tigers are in a must win series with division leading Minnesota who are looking to clinch the AL Central as early as possible to set up their rotation for the post season.
The pitching matchup sees ex Boston pitcher Trevor Cahill released after the Red Sox fell from the playoff picture and has done well in his new surroundings with a 2.55 ERA in his six starts and has lowered his BB/9 and raised his K/9.
Phil Hughes has pitched well for the Twins this season in an impressive rotation setup by GM McAvoy and is on course to pitch 200 innings just as he did in 2016.
The Twins must be careful of the Tigers 3B/SS combination of Castellanos and Iglesias who form a solid defensively partnership but are also hitting the snot out of the ball in the month of September, they have combined for 13 HR and 33 RBI this month.
The Twins have players hitting well this month but are not hitting for power. Mauer, Kepler and Gordon are hitting .385, .355 and 345. Gordon leads the team this month in RBI’s (11) while Kenny Vargas when he connects has power (5) but is hitting just .222 for September.
When/if the game is turned over the bullpen the Twins may have to depend on Jake Reed who has been lights this month with a 1.54 ERA, closer Feigi has struggled somewhat registering only 3 of his 27 saves and posting a 7.56 ERA.
Tiger closer Bruce Rondon also with 27 saves has had his struggles in September (6.89 ERA) so it may fall to the likes of Rasmus and Nesbitt to shut down any late Minnesota rallies.
Game will be broadcast on the slack channel ‘ssglivegames‘ at Sunday 1PM ET.
