SSG Baseball Postseason – close games all the way?

Four games into post season and we have seen three out of the four games played decided by the odd run.

Last Thursday saw the Yankees take advantage of an off par Blue Jays bullpen to overcome a 4-1 scoreline posting a run in the eighth, ninth and crucially the tenth with 2B Yoilan Cerce launching a Letroy Hawkins 1-2 pitch deep into the New York evening for a 5-4 victory.

Friday saw the only game played so far not to be decided by the odd run as the Brewers jumped on James Shields early and he didn’t last out of the fourth allowing six runs, nine hits including three home runs. The Padres could not recover from the early blasting from the Brewers’ bats and went quietly out of the play-offs losing 9-1 with Brewers SP Mike Fiers pitching a complete game, allowing one run.

Saturday saw the start of the AL Divisional Series, with the Yankees joining Oakland, Cleveland and Boston. Oakland turned the tables on the Yankees from Thursday scoring the winning run in the ninth with Brett Lawrie driving in Coco Crisp off Dellin Betances for a 1-0 lead in the series, final 3-2 Oakland.

The Red Sox called the bullpen early, they had to as starter Justin Masterson threw a ball then gave up a single to Jason Kipnis and suffered an oblique strain. A combination of nine bullpen guys pitched the rest of the game and overcome a 4-1 deficit at one point to win the opening game of the series for Boston. Masterson is expected to be out for around 6 days.

Sunday sees the start of the NL Divisional series as well as the second games of the AL Divisional series with projected match-ups included.
