Yankees Select Washington State’s Avila #1 Overall

The Yankees had the top overall pick in Monday’s draft, and although they stayed quiet about their pick right up until the clock struck midnight, they seemed to have known all along who they wanted.

New York selected Washington State 3B Israel Avila and will have two months to sign him to a professional contract. Avila’s agent has indicated he’s open to signing with the Yankees, but it may take a deal close to $5M for him to sign and forego the remaining college eligibility he still has.

Avila hit .313./.410/.672 with 24 HRs during his sophomore season, yet recently failed two courses. The school was considering placing him on academic probation.

What are your thoughts on the draft? Do you like the Yankees pick? See any sleepers? How did the draft go for your team as a whole? Post your thoughts below!
