SSG Pro Football Week Five Game of the Week

Sunday, October 8th

Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) @ Seattle Seahawks (3-1)

Two teams tied for 1st place in their Divisions face each other in a Week 5 matchup that is an important game to win as both teams are in very tough divisions.

Philadelphia Eagles Run Offense versus Seattle Seahawks Run Defense

The Eagles are not a team built around it’s running game, it starts with RB DeMarco Murray who has struggled so far this season but has managed to rush for over 1ooo yards in each of the last two seasons. I think a big reason why Murray has struggled is that he is splitting playing time with Rookie RB Bridges right now. The Offensive Line is strong at both Tackle positions and it is here where they will do most of their damage when running the ball. I do feel that they need to give Murray more of the load in order to see better results. This would be a good week for them to run the ball more through Murray as the Seahawks are ranked 24th against the run. The Seahawks defense is strong on each end of its line and could struggle with runs up the middle. I think this is a pretty even match up, it will be interesting to see if the gameplan for the Eagles does change to have Murray featured more.

Verdict: EVEN

Seattle Seahawks Run Offense versus Philadelphia Eagles Run Defense

Led by Veteran RB Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks have not looked good running the ball the last two weeks. Lynch has averaged 2.2 yards per carry from 39 carries in the last two games. The Eagles are ok against the run, nothing spectacular. They give up 93 yards rushing per game and will look forward going up against an out of form Lynch. Injuries have certainly played a factor on the Seahawks Offensive Line. On the Defensive side of the ball, the Eagles are missing their best player LDE Fletcher Cox, this is a big loss and will certainly help someone like Lynch gain some confidence going into this matchup. With Cox out this is a pretty weak Defensive Line and could well be a big day for Marshawn Lynch. Like the Eagles though, this is not how the Seahawks are built but based on injuries you might see them run the ball more than they have in recent weeks.

Verdict: SEATTLE

Philadelphia Eagles Pass Offense versus Seattle Seahawks Pass Defense

After two poor performances from QB Bradford in their first two games, last week he showed the SSG exactly what he can do, with a 3td, 300-yard performance in a win over the Buccs.  Statistically, the Seahawks Pass Defense is weaker than Tampa Bay through the first 4 weeks of the season. Bradford relies heavily on FL Agholor, if the Seahawks can shut him down it will be difficult for Bradford to repeat last weeks performance. The Seahawks Lockdown Corner Sherman is probable going into the game, but they might not risk him for fear of further injury. If he play’s I think it will be very difficult for the Eagles. His absence the last two games has certainly hurt this Secondary and without him will prove difficult to stop any pass offense. I think Sherman is the difference here.

Seattle Seahawks Pass Offense versus Philadelphia Eagles Pass Defense

The Seahawks have the worst ranked pass offense through the first 4 weeks, on paper it does not look possible.  However a broken wrist to QB Wilson has really hurt the Seahawks, Wayne Walters has come in and done a decent job. Wilson is a gametime decision and will certainly be a big difference for this Pass Offense if he plays. Regardless of who sets up behind center, the Offensive Line needs to do a better job of protecting the QB and has given up 10 sacks over the first 4 games. Defenses are putting a lot of pressure on the QB and this needs to be rectified if the Seahawks are going to contend this season. On Defense the Eagles could have great success with WLB Graham and SLB Barwin getting to the QB. If the Quarterback gets time the Seahawks could have great success against a weak secondary.

I have the Eagles Pass Defense having the upper hand over the Seahawks Pass Offense. I think the Seahawks Offensive Line versus the Eagles Pass Rush is the key matchup. If the Seahawks can overcome the injury to LT Okung and allow the QB to have time to throw the ball they can have success in this game. Linebackers Graham and Barwin could have a big day if the line continues to struggle.
